Sep 11, 2001, Two planes struck the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The first American Airlines Flight 11, 87 civilians (including 11 crew members) aboard, hit the North Tower at 08:46 Eastern Time (12:46 GMT). The second United Airlines Flight 175, 60 civilians (including 9 crew members) aboard, crashed into the South Tower at 09:03.
At 09:37 a third plane American Airlines Flight 77, 59 civilians (including 6 crew members) aboard, destroyed the western face of the Pentagon, Washington DC.
The fourth plane United Airlines Flight 93, 39 civilians (including 7 crew members) aboard, crashed in a field in Pennsylvania at 10:03 after passengers fought back. It is thought the hijackers had meant to attack the Capitol Building in Washington DC.
The September 11, 2001 attacks caused the deaths of 2,977 people.
